It is distributed mainly in Peru, Chile, and Argentina, with some small populations in Bolivia and Paraguay.
What is a Guanaco?
The guanaco (Lama guanicoe) is a wild South American camelid native to the Andes mountains and surrounding areas. Resembling a llama but more agile and smaller, guanacos are known for their long necks, slender bodies, and distinctive reddish-brown coats. These remarkable animals play a crucial role in their ecosystem, grazing on grasses and shrubs, which helps maintain the health of their habitats.
It plays a key role in the Andean Patagonian ecosystem as a seed disperser and food source for its predator, the puma, and scavenger species, such as the Andean condor and the fox. For this reason, recovering their populations was fundamental in transforming the former Estancia Chacabuco into the current Patagonia National Park, where there are currently more than 3,000 guanacos living in the park!
Since 2006, our team, together with Tompkins Conservation and CONAF rangers, has been conducting a census of the population once a year. We hope that their distribution will continue to increase, thus contributing to strengthening the ecosystems!
