Brazil's LATAM Airlines triples operations at Rio de Janeiro
SUMMARY
- Big changes at Rio airports: Restrictions at Santos Dumont prompted schedule changes by LATAM and Azul, with LATAM tripling the number of domestic seats at Galeao Airport.
- New routes and changes for LATAM Airlines: LATAM Airlines will launch three new routes from Galeao in 2024 and add 10 domestic routes from Santos Dumont.
- Restrictions in Santos Dumont: The Brazilian government has restricted flights within 400 kilometers of Santos Dumont, sparking opposition from the industry. Only certain cities will be connected, while important destinations lie outside the new radius.
Big changes are coming to Rio de Janeiro's two airports: Santos Dumont (SDU) and Galeao International (GIG). Santos Dumont has route restrictions, causing Brazilian airlines to change their flight schedules from this legendary airport.
LATAM Brasil has announced that it will triple its domestic seat capacity in Galeao and has completed flight rescheduling from Rio de Janeiro to accommodate new operating restrictions in Santos Dumont. Azul Linhas Aéreas announced the changes that will be made in Rio last week.
When it comes to new changes, there is always a degree of uncertainty and trepidation. However, it is important to remember that change can also bring about positive results. By embracing new ideas and approaches, we open ourselves up to new opportunities and growth. It is important to approach changes with an open mind and a willingness to adapt. Only then can we truly reap the benefits of progress and development.
As a result of the changes made to their schedules, LATAM Brasil has announced a threefold increase in domestic seats departing from Galeão Airport during the first quarter of 2024, as compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, when looking at the total amount of seats offered (both domestic and international), LATAM's overall offering in Rio de Janeiro will be 5% higher during the first quarter of 2024 than it was during the same period in 2023.

As per the announcement made by the organization, LATAM will have the opportunity to commence operations on three fresh routes departing from Galeão in January 2024. The new destinations will include Manaus (MAO), Recife (REC), and Natal.
In the upcoming future, LATAM is going to relocate ten domestic routes away from Santos Dumont airport. As a result of this decision, 179 weekly flights will no longer be available from this airport. The destinations that will be affected include Porto Seguro, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Porto Alegre, Goiania, Salvador, Confins, Vitória, Sao Paulo Guarulhos, and Brasilia. The first quarter of 2024 will be the time period in which these changes will take place.
The Brazilian government has put a restriction on Santos Dumont, enforcing a maximum range of 400 kilometers (or 248.5 miles) for all flights. This measure is to be implemented in 2024, and despite the industry's opposition, it remains in place.
The new 400-kilometer radius will place significant limitations on the operations that can be carried out at Santos Dumont. Some of the Brazilian cities that will still be accessible via this iconic airport include Sao Paulo, Campinas, Juiz de Fora, and Belo Horizonte. However, the remaining areas of Brazil, including critical destinations such as Manaus, Natal, Recife, and Brasilia, will be excluded from the new radius.
